I posted my county, Martin county Mn. A huge pork county. Behind Sioux Iowa county but in top 10 nationally, was at 1 point top 3 or 4 according to what stat’s I could find. Live in Mn and farm on both sides of the line. Our grain bins and shop are in Iowa so my location. My point is our area while being a huge hog county is going thru some big changes now. While hog production is up 1.5 according to your figures which I believe is same as saying corn is yielding 1.5% more every where which would not be correct.Overall 1.5 % increase does not mean all areas are expanding or contracting the same. We raise quite a few pigs ourselves annually in Martin County Minnesota side so understand the business. You used the words massive reduction which I did not, but my words that our county is going thru some changes.

Ahh, I'm dealing with a Minnesotan... I'll type slower... I'M KIDDING! :)

It did not make sense that "your county" was Martin Mn, when your location says NW IA, but I see why you list it as such. The 1.5% is national numbers, based off daily slaughter reports from the packers. I don't agree with your crop analogy. You can grow more corn on an acre, you can't grow more hogs in the same finishing space as last year, unless you are turning them faster, and having every feeder all of a sudden get to market sooner, and then every sow unit bump up their weaning schedule, would be quite a feat. If nationally we are up 1.5%, we need 1.5% more finishing spaces, not the same or less.

I feed in "modern" tunnel vent fully slatted hog barns, and in old partial slat crappy ventilation barns and in between. Shutting down a barn because it's "old" is a choice as is having empty barns when there are pigs looking for a home.
