Nw Iowa
We have had more than 1.5 shrinkage here of operators and barns. Our local county has dropped from I think 4th or 5th nation overall to now ninth as far as can tell from from statistics that I could find on the internet. ( Martin County MN) Glen Taylor got out of feeding pigs in last 2 years, left 1000’s and 1000’s of pig spaces without a contract ( some in our county, a lot slightly more west) . A lot are filled, some didn’t, but alot at less money than before. We are also losing some breeding barn sites locally, as purs has really been a problem. A lot of very good truckers hauling, hauling a few less pigs. Five years ago would have been different. That is here, same area where OP is from or close. He asked for ideas, here trucking pigs would not be as attractive as it was 5 years ago. Yes they can move to a different area but many of them are already going further than they were to get loads. We have as many barns here as just about anywhere but probably older overall than a lot of areas and definitely some big changes to our local economy.
