Subject: 100% Tariff on Chinese electric vehicles?

Starbuck Manitoba Canada
So the Canadian government placed a 100% tariff on electric vehicle imports from China in the name of, "To save the Canadian consumer". So the Canadian consumer now has no choice but to buy locally North American made electric vehicles at inflated prices so that our overpaid auto executives can make bank.
Could someone explain to me how this concept is benefiting the consumer?

All these protectionist tariffs that governments are putting in place are similar to what happened in the late 1920's. how well did that work out.
