Faunsdale, AL | You are pushing the rod into the body of the grease gun aren’t you?
Basically the process is
1 once gun is empty, pull t handle back and lock it if it’s not really empty, you’ll notice when the rod pulls back without hitting the plunger inside BEFORE you screw pump body off the top and release the remaining grease inside!
2 screw tube off the gun’s pump end and pull out empty tube. Cheap tubes or ones that have been in gun a long time, gun got wet a bunch, the tube may have to be dug out of the gun……..get it ALL out!
3 remove cap and drop new cartridge into gun, seating it gently over the rubber plunger in the bottom. Metal ring should be nearly touching end of grease gun tube
4 pull the ring and remove metal seal. Never do this step until tube is safely in the gun. Grease can and will cleanly fall out of the tube if it’s held vertical on a warm day.
5 start pump body on tube threads and tighten a few turns leaving a place for air to escape.
6 pull back on t handle and release lock. Twist handle and pull/feel to engage rod in the internal spring loaded plunger/grease follower that’s pushing the grease. This will allow you to push the plunger and quickly force out air as you pump the gun a few times.
7 TIGHTEN pump body onto tube
8 pull gently and twist to release rod from the plunger/follower inside and then push it all the way into the tube.
9 good to go…….if it quits pumping, pull t handle out until you can twist and engage it in the plunger/follower and push again while pumping. You can loosen pump a few turns on the tube body but be careful, too much and you’ll have a mess! If yours has a vent you can push that while pressurizing with the T handle Same technique if it stops as you get close to the end of the tube. Check grease content at any time by gently pulling t handle out until it stops. Some guns will stop pumping when close to empty and need some help. Most do not, when they quit pumping, they're empty
I’ve never worried about how I store the grease gun with grease in it. Usually laying in bed of pickup but may be hanging on a nail in shop with T handle down, pump up. Spring should keep grease up to pump and not allow air in. Corn head grease you may need to pull rod back and lock it for storage to avoid the thin grease migrating through/past the follower inside and winding up in bottom of gun tube so it squirts out everywhere as you pull t handle out to load next cartridge of grease.
