S Illinois | Most elevators want the combo of the two. Take as much grain in as possible and turn as much as they can but also basically be full when that last acre is harvested. They also have to look out a ways as Dec-Jan will bring the next rush of grain and they would like to have space then also.
Edit: Most elevator managers would say keeping space for bushels to be dumped at all times in the fall is their biggest headache. No one wants to be the place that has to post a “closed for dumping” sign. Really pisses customers off when that happens more than once and grain can’t be harvested.
