| Perhaps that is true, (the turning of the facility during harvest multiple times) but here I feel what the local elevators would really like is to fill up with elevator owned grain exactly once during harvest and stop taking grain there. Of course they know they can't do that, so they take whatever actions are needed to get to the end of harvest. My understanding is there isn't that much margin in just receiving grain at harvest and immediately shipping out. The margin comes in buying cheap harvest basis and merchandising those bushels appropriately. They really can only get this on bushels that they can own and store themselves. Storage rates at commercial elevators really reflect the lost opportunity cost of the elevator not owning the grain. | |
