Nw Iowa
This hog cycle is closing some of the hog sites here. Just less loads. The guys that are selling are trying to cut every expense possible. Some of freight guys are looking to truck something else. It cycles like everything else. He stays busy with three trucks but definitely not expanding. He has been in business for almost 20 years. Took him along time to get where he is at. He is just isn’t very optimistic about the hog business in General right now. We also raise hogs, I am afraid there are some big changes coming. Most of our pigs are sourced fairly locally. Hicks location is very close to mine so throwing it out there.
I also don’t think most realize that you don’t just start trucking hogs in your off season. He also farms with us and is gone most days till after noon, he leaves at 3:30 in the morning to load, some days gone all day if there are multiple loads. Winter can be bad as always have a live load that has to meet packers schedule and pots and ice and wind are tricky.
So it is no different than anything else, best runs are hard to get into. Hog expansion is definitely null so not a lot of new opportunities. Anybody can make it in anything if they want it bad enough. But nothing is as easy as it looks.
