Deere6,
I agree about self imposed. It seems like one generation's luxury is the next gen 'need.' We're so stressed out we 'have' to have 2 or 3 vacations a year, and we most definitely better get the high counytry or king ranch edition pickup! We'd also be a lot further ahead without social media telling us we're behind!
But on the other hand, this common 1600 sq ft house has suddenly, what, doubled in cost over the last 15 years? We built a no frills 1560 sq ft about 11 years ago. Very basic, common design, whole house interior was painted the same color, etc. Was about 220k, with unfinished basement and 2 car garage. We didn't do the work, that price was pretty much turnkey. I would have liked to build my own, but it would have just led to major frustration. My understanding is this same house today would be well over 300k. I haven't priced one out, so don't know for sure. All while the corn price is about the same as it was in 2013. Grocery bills have gone way up also, not trying to be negative here. It's just facts. For the most part we buy store brand vs name brand groceries, etc. We also eat at home a lot. Some of these increases are really not self imposed at all. Not saying we shouldn't trim a little more fat yet... Maybe eat beans and rice another time or so a week? It can be really hard to consciously 'tighten the belt'. Maybe we can have a discussion on this one.
