When I was a kid we had a lot of ponies and then horses. We also had a lot of cattle on 3 different farms. In the fall after corn harvest, my Dad would let the cattle out on the corn stalks on our home farm about noon and when we got home from school, we had to ride our horses out to get the cattle back in their pens on the building site (I suppose that he was worried that the cows would get sick from eating too much corn on the ground.... this was the late 1960's to early 70's). It didn't matter if it was sunny and 65 degrees or raining and 30 degrees. I remember how badly sleet hurt my nose when it hit it. I had to ride with my hand/glove covering my face/nose.

Several year later I had a good friend who had riding horses and he finally talked me into going riding one afternoon. After riding for a couple of hours, I realized that every time I had gotten hurt while riding a dirt bike, it was because I did something stupid, like doing wheelies, jumping something or simply losing control. It wasn't because a leaf blew across in front of the bike and startled it, or the bike was scared to cross a bridge on a gravel road or a loud noise scared it. I haven't been on a horse since..... and I still don;t miss it either.
