My dad started out farming with his FIL (my mom's dad) with horses and mules. Within a few years he bought his first used tractor. Dad said he never minded farming with horses but he hated the mules. He said they were stubborn and would kick the side of the barn out (literally). He never liked working with the mules.

Funny the things we remember.

Grandpa said that mules were more sure-footed than the horses. He said a team of mules could pull a loaded wagon (hand picked ear corn) over Star Bridge (local term) in winter time and the teams of horses couldn't.

He also told me that if you ever had to farm with horses you wouldn't want any horses today! (I didn't listen)

Sure miss that man. Gone almost 12 years now.
