Madison Co. Virginia | To add my thoughts on the raw milk question -- Raw milk does come with an inherent risk; a risk I'm willing to take for affordable and good-tasting milk. The risk is much less if you've been drinking that milk for years already, if the cows are in the same locale and environment as you, and if it's drunk promptly.
I wouldn't mind if local raw-milk sales were legal, but I'm opposed to it becoming a commodity that's shipped hundred of miles away and potentially sitting on shelves for weeks before use. That's too much risk to the general populace, and I think the government is right in requiring pasteurization.
I have no qualms about drinking raw milk from my own cows, and even from the cows of my neighbor. But if I'm visiting someone a distance away, I'll be more hesitant to drink their raw milk. There's too much chance of a different mix of bacteria in their milk than what my body is used to. | |
