Those old ones are hard to adopt out, good to see you giving them a good home.  We recently got one from the shelter. She had been adopted out twice with the last person claiming she tried to bite them.  Given that, she was scheduled to be put down.  We were able to get her and she is the sweetest, most gentle dog we have ever had.  She was very timid when we got her and if you raised your voice she would cower down in fear.  Due to that we think she was abused by the previous owner. In my opinion there is a special place for those who abuse dogs or any other animals.
