We have made several for our 4 x 4 x 8 bales. Whether to buy or to build depends on your fabrication skills.
If you are only going to pick one bale at a time, I would use 2 spears about 30 inches apart. If you are carrying two at a time, one on top of the other, then I would use 4 spears.
