nw NC | 15 or so years ago I needed about a half bag of seed corn to finish planting my silage corn . I shelled the flat kernels from some ear corn I had stored from previous crop ( same variety ) and put it in two rows of a four row planter. It came up perfectly, grew well and looked good . It had good , full ears like hybrid . The only visible difference between hybrid seed and ear corn seed was that the ear corn seed's stalk height and ear placement height varied a little from plant to plant within the row . Hybrid was more uniform. I would like to try it again but I have not had any ear corn since then; it all goes to silage. | |
