Yeah, everything you said checks out.   Also, there's the fact that a bunch of people who survived say 1984-1994 because sheer hard work could turn cheap corn into profitable pork walking off the farm, looked around at a bunch of worn-out junk facilities that they had been limping by forever and said screw this.  Double screw this if the kids who had been doing a bunch of free labor holding pitchforks and buckets also were hitting an age where they could say screw this, we aren't doing that drudgery any more.
