Use whichever way you think is the easiest for you to get it spread to a smooth, even thickness. The most important step in my mind, is to compact it as much as possible. . I rented a 6000# vibratory roller compactor which worked great.

My driveway is two tenths of a mile long. It has a base of crushed limestone. I was having to add a load or two of gravel every 2-3 yrs and constantly battling potholes. It's been about 3.5 years since I put asphalt millings down. Haven't had a single pothole since. It seems to be holding up well.
