Dagmar, MT | It sounds like a big deal from what I’ve heard, read today & yesterday. I’ve sold them green peas & lentils over the years. Last sale was early 2023 & it took too long for payment so I gave up on them. A neighbor said today he had to take them to the grain commission to get paid. Neighbor used to farm in Canada & still has acres in Canada so he maybe had more pull. A US farmer would have very little recourse if financials fall apart for Canadian buyer.
Kambietz Farms by Regina is the owner I believe. They have different entities…one is Above Food. Sounds like they got big into fake meat made from peas/lentils & it backfired. Bankruptcy laws don’t mesh well across the border. I don’t think you’re in trouble for not filling your contract with a broke company in Canada. I wouldn’t deliver a bushel if Purely is a buyer. Canadian growers might be forced into it, but I’m guessing you’ll be ok marketing elsewhere.
