I will disagree that there is nothing to be gained from scouting fields in season especially between two hybrids planted side by side. If you have one hybrid excelling at fending off disease in season and another falls on its face would you not want to know? The point is to show how the two hybrids are different and tolerate the same weather in the same field. The yield and moisture is only part of the puzzle. Emergence, seedling vigor, stand ability, planting performance, disease suppression, drought tolerance, soil adaptability, etc are all important aspects to a crop. If one of these hybrids didn’t need a fungicide to hold off tar spot and could have saved $40/ac would that not be beneficial to know? Maybe one makes 250 without fungicide and the other makes 260 with it but wouldn’t have without is that not more important than final yield? I’m perplexed that you don’t see the significance of comparisons through the growing season as a determination to selecting hybrids in the future. You strike me as someone who doesn’t look at just the numbers on the monitor.
