Subject: Dekalb and Pioneer S x S

Central Indiana
Posted earlier this spring about a side by side with Pioneer 1136AM and Dekalb 111-35. Didn’t take any plant pictures today but grabbed some ears from each. Plant health is a little better on dekalb but both are very close. Pioneer has a touch more tar spot showing up above the ear leaf. Both hybrids looks really nice and are still very green. Pioneer seems to be a little more consistent as far as ear length goes.

• Pioneer 1136 yield potential using rough figures -
34,000x16x42/80,000 = 285 bu/ac

• Dekalb 111-35 yield potential using rough figures -
34,000x16x36/75,000 = 261

Ear Descriptions…Pioneer has longer ear with consistent grain length and rows around. Dekalb has less consistent ear length and has variations of 14,16, and a random 18 rows around.

Kernel Descriptions…Pioneer longer kernel but not as wide and smaller due to grain length. Dekalb larger kernels that are wide and very little dent in kernel depth. Dekalb variety known to be heavy so that’s the reasoning behind fewer kernels per bushel. If it has a nice finish and goes down to 70k per bushel that puts it at 280. Very possible given cooler conditions forecasted and slow dry down. Grain quality is very high on Dekalb and has potential to go to food grade market.

Overall both hybrids look very nice. This ground is not known to produce yields of this caliber in fact rarely see 240+ on yield monitor in the good spots. An overall average above 220 would be spectacular for this farm of 130 acres. 250+ is unheard of. I’m really looking forward to shelling these two hybrids and comparing the grain quality and dry down of both. I’ll post results when we shell it but will be October before we get to the farm. Milk line is a little lower in the Pioneer so I expect a point or two drier difference this fall.

Pictures- Dekalb on top and Pioneer on bottom. First picture of kernels will be pioneer and second will be Dekalb.
