It is definitely beneficial to lose weight if overweight. The salt factor with hypertension is less direct. Some people are sensitive to salt and can lower their BP by avoiding salt. For others, not so much. But there still is a benefit (and not much risk) to consuming less salt. This study says that about 1/3 of healthy people and about 60% of people with hypertension can benefit by consuming less salt. The pressure rise is only about 5 points, which is not that much, but is still something.
