North Central Kansas | We taught the world how to grow wheat. Now we are the last resort market for wheat. My area used to be all wheat. That changed after the 1995 farm bill. Wheat was never a money maker. It kept us in poverty out here on the plains. The only market we have in my area that the US is king in is Grain Sorghum. Unfortunately the genetic research and lack of insect control and herbicide options have limited the acres planted. Grain sorghum was good for several years. Now it either gets ate by chinch bugs, sugar cane aphids or head worms eat the seed. In the end it will all fall over and you will leave your profit laying on the ground. Corn and beans have now taken over most of the acres here. Our corn goes to the ethanal plants and feedlots. Beans go to the crush plants or to the gulf. | |
