EC SoDak | I’d say typically you’re correct. If you plant expensive genetics, you tend to do things to get max value out of them.
I was out with my dealer digging roots, plant health, ear checks this past week. Things look alright in the average areas, good roots, but yields were only in that 200-215 range, which he was happy about. I view it a different way, 230+ aph ground only doing that means you’re generally leaving a bunch of your profit on the table. I’ve had Pioneer Q (102/then 110 silage) on one piece 2 times, Mustang SS (100 day) once, and LG conventional (95 day) once in the last 4 growing seasons. Id say the one that did the best (depending what the 111 does this year) was the LG conventional that had stand issues from a late season windstorm a week before harvest. I think it did around 210 but had 40ish bushels on the ground, not surprising since it was a big drought year so the stalk cannibalized itself and couldn’t handle a 70 mph wind that late in the season.
Moral of the story is, 300+ seed can play second or third fiddle to a 130 unit seed. Don’t be afraid to tell the big boys you’re not always paying that premium, especially when things look to get tight.
