Subject: RE: Iowa fence laws

Washington Co Ks
I Kansas it is the same way. It is commonly thought that each landowner is responsible for the fence to their right. When I was going to build a new fence where the other landowner didn't need a fence, I looked up just what the law said. I found that the written law says that each owner is responsible for half of the whole thing. The fence that I was going to replace was a half mile long and had hedge trees growing in it the whole way. I told the neighbor what I wanted to do and asked if he would pay some of the cost and I would put it in. The neighbor also has a dozer and excavator, so I had them take out the trees. He said that they would take out the trees and half of it would be on him. He also would furnish half of the post and wire. When I didn't get a bill for my share of tree removal I asked him one day about it. He said that I built it, and he would stand the line in preparation. The dozer operator did a good job and built the line up a little so the snow would blow out of the fence and water would not run down the fence line. Good neighbors are a blessing.
