Subject: RE: Belly rupture

Having worked in the medical field, I recommend getting it repaired or seriously consider it. As has been mentioned, the hernia could incarcerate and trap the bowel in the sac. And as we age our tissue weakens. Just guessing based on what you've said, likely any repair will require mesh and even that requires being able to sew it to tissue that is strong enough. Get a second opinion.

As far as "personal" experience, my grandfather, at the age of 89, developed appendicitis. The butcher that was his surgeon back in 1973 sat on him until the appendix ruptured. He survived that, but developed an incisional hernia subsequently. It grew to be fairly large and when the infection had cleared that the surgeon could go back in and repair it, so weak was the tissue that the hernia had grown large and he had difficulty pushing the colon back in. He had to resect the bowel. That my grandfather didn't survive.

Given the circumstances the country is currently in, I wouldn't recommend postponing any necessary procedure. Surgeon eventually lost his license to practice, but back then people had "faith' in "the doctor." He cost both of my maternal grandparents their lives.
