| I’ll start with a little background. I am a newly elected commissioner on a little drainage district in southeast Illinois that covers about 10,000 acres. I knew we had a little work to do but didn’t realize the mess I was inheriting. Currently between some repairs on the levee system (our levee is still a federal levee so we are subject to the army corps of engineers timelines and requirements) and a significant ditch cleaning project, I need to come up with about a million dollars to fund these projects. Unfortunately my predecessors never wanted to raise taxes on their neighbors so as it stands today, we have about $30k annual budget to do a million dollars worth of work. We obviously have no choice but to raise taxes some. I am just trying to figure out if there are any grant programs people have used successfully to help lessen the tax burden? I see there are a couple of potential options through nrcs but they look like they are more loan programs than grants. I just don’t want to go tell my neighbors, landlords, and friends that their drainage district taxes are increasing by 5-7x unless I know we have exhausted all other options. Thanks! | |
