It is one thing if you have your own facilities.
What about the guy who has to haul to the elevator?
Why would he harvest at 24%, and pay for 9 points of drying (10 in some cases) at 3 cents per point? That would take your $3.60 harvest price down to $3.30. Does insurance cover that cost, as well? I ask that because around here, corn seems to be behind, and will be wetter than normal at the normal harvest date. Wouldn't one be better off waiting until it is 18 or less, as we normally do, before hauling into town?
Based on our experience and data, I have settled on a 3 bushel per point "loss" after decades of observing it both using technology and scale tickets . Last year, 21 bushel on 6 points so it was a bit more than avg. So, a 10 point moisture change would be 30 bushel. If you presold at $5, that $150 dollars an acre, $4, 120, and $3.50 = $105. At a .30 cent drying charge on 200 bushel crop, that's a $60 charge. So worst case, with nothing more included(trucking, combine hours, labor etc), that leaves you $45 an acre to pay for harvesting early. It is somewhat year dependent, and likely your climate will play a part as well. But that is what it is "here".
Take care
