Subject: RE: Metal roof: standing seam or metal shingle

Middlesex County, Ontario
On my parents' new house we put on an "Easy Shake" roof. They are long steel sheets just like barn steel, but they have some rolled texture that give the look of shingles (or shakes). We opted to put full length sheets from ridge to eave to minimize any seams. It is what I would do. This was the local supplier and installer, they specialize in manufacturing steel roofs and siding for mostly agricultural and were less expensive than any residential roofing company. They have a bunch of pictures on their site.

There are 20 year old steel shingles that look like terra cotta on my home. They have a textured coating that has been eroding for a long time. It looks bad and fills my eaves throughs with sandy goop. The shingles are still steel and still have the same colour underneath the textured coating so its not like its going to leak, its just disappointing if you look close. The company supplied a lifetime warranty and just folds and re-registers every 5-7 years to get out of the warranty claims. From reading online that is very typical of steel roofs with textured coatings. I don't like all the seams up there and I don't like how the terra cotta profile dents easily. If I was to redo it I would do some kind of sheet metal.

We did a rental home with barn steel and personally I think it looks great, went on easy, will last forever. I don't know how loud it is when it rains though.
