My grasshopper lawn mower has the collar and little balls too. My problem mostly is getting it to release to remove the front deck, after running is the dust for years. No real way to get the penetrating oil to the problem. Dirt packed into the release collar is the problem. Air gun and water works best.
yes the slide lock is still a better way, can always hammer it in to get shaft off.
