The trade deficit not mattering is straight up BS. If it doesn't matter why bother exporting anything at all, lets just import what we want and keep our stuff to ourselves, we can pay for the imports with inflation. No one needs to pay taxes or even work, we'll just create the dollars.
Sure there's a level that can be sustained for a long time. If you have enough wealth you can live off of it for a long time before the bank account is empty but that still doesn't mean that it doesn't matter. If you're spending more than you take in, the bank account will hit zero at some point in time.
