Windom, MN | I'm about 2 1/2 hours west of there, so can't really tell you how farming is that way, but here is what I saw.
Went to Lanesboro (kind of close) last weekend, and it is much prettier country than here. Wife even commented that farming there would e prettier. More hills and nothing is square. Crops look amazing this year. Not sure I would want really big equipment in those fields, so not sure what the average farm size is there. A lot of fields looked like 12 row equipment would work well.
I haul a lot of my grain to Fairmont and Welcome, MN. There is a CHS soybean plant in Fairmont and a Valero ethanol plant in Welcome. Usually very good basis in Martin County due to a large number of hogs, 2 ethanol plants (Green Valley? in Fairmont too) and Crystal Valley feed mill in Trimont. There is competition for grain there, but not sure that's the case the farther east you go as I see a lot of trucks from that way.
Can't help you with county baseline APH, but it seems the yields are similar to here Corn 200+ and Beans 55-60+ on average. Not sure if other crops are common over there, but did notice a lot of corn and soybeans. You're not going to double crop anything, growing season is too short. Planting has traditionally been April 20-May 15th for Corn and May 1 to June 10 for soybeans. Seem to lose yield on corn planted after May 1, and beans can be planted until July 4, but usually diminishing returns after June 1st. Harvest is usually soybeans 1st sometime last week in September and we wrap up harvest with corn typically around veterans day (fall tillage later than that), but can go until Thanksgiving depending on weather. October is generally a good harvest window, but November can get tricky. First snow mid-November on average and it may stick around until late March. | |
