| In Michigan we have a county road commission that is in charge of all county roads. The county is supposed to maintain the gravel roads and cost share any hard top roads (greatly simplified explaination). It is still budget dependent. Rural areas still struggle. Quite a few townships have passed road maintenance millages so they have some money to entice the county to work on the roads.
Probably the biggest complaint is that all road work must be performed through the county. There are quite a few comments that a road contractor could be hired for much less than the county charges to do the same work.
I don’t see a township turning over their autonomy to a larger government agency as the best solution. It seems as though the county, over the years has built up a significant overhead that must be paid for. | |
