Probably a little dramatic with your assumptions.
It's in a sparsely populated ranching farming area. I'm sure all of the children have parents in the same area with the same occupation.
I bet all their neighbors are on Maudes side and not treating them like criminals.
SD west river folks have each other's back; they don't hate each other.
