Different regions definitely have different economics in play. For my area of SD we have good soil, but the weather is so inconsistent. One year I can raise 200 bu/ac corn 60 bu/ac soybeans, next year it's 50 & 10; next year it can be 120 & 40, then back to 100 & 35; then boom back to 200 & 60. Just wild variation. Makes it more difficult to market, take risk etc...due to inconsistentcy. It's my understanding that MN, IA, NE, IL, & IN just have way more consistency in yields. With that though, comes higher costs for everything. So their profit margin hinges on that last 20 but/AC in corn and 10 bu/AC in soybeans.
