SW MN | I would say that in the SW corner of MN, for the most part, we have a pretty good looking crop from the road. Once you get into the fields though it is highly variable. I am not saying we don't have a good crop, but I don't think it beats last year if you received some rain. In my travels, I have felt that we have some of the best looking crops in the state, which is why if I had to bet, I would take the under on MN at 185.
I just drove past a couple of fields this weekend that the corn fields weren't tasseled. It looked to be two 1/2 sections of corn in an area where sweet corn isn't a crop. How long does that corn need to make it to maturity? Based on this years weather, I am not thinking it makes it.
There are plenty of holes in the crop. Just depends on the finish. Highs this past week were in the low 70's with the lows in the low 50's. GDU's are 80-100 behind normal since planting. Almost 200 behind the past 2 years. My GDU calculator says I am projected to make black layer anywhere from 9/18 - 10/3 depending on maturity. I may be sweating a bit on this year and I just purchased 25K gallons of propane to cover me.
Soybeans are all over the board. Personally, my beans are intermittently canopied on 30" rows with the last field of beans planted on the 18th of May. They are short, starting to get some yellowing tint to them.
I will know more tonight on development as it's my night to scout. Sweet corn in the area is decent sized, but showed pollination issues and small kernels from the neighbors I got it from. I have seen some pollination issues in the corn I checked 2 weeks ago. | |
