Subject: RE: EV Day Trip Comparison

ICE data was from the trip meter. The trip meter was 304 km at 10.1 L/100km when we arrived back home. So 30.7 L of 72.5 L tank.. or 42.3% of it's range to cover 304 km.

For the EV we usually top up the charge to 80% daily.

In prep for this trip the charge was topped up 10% to 90% using 7.9 kWh for 0.43 CAD. (5.4 c/kWh)
At the destination the charge was 36%. We topped up at the destination to 87% using 37.5 kWh for 13.48 CAD. (36 c/kWh)
Got home with 21% and topped up last night to 80% with 45.9 kWh for 2.48 CAD. (5.4 c/kWH)

So we used 54% of the battery on the way out and 66% on the way home. My wife drove the way out and I the way back. My foot is heavier than hers, and there was a tail wind for her and a head wind for me.

Had we run the entire trip using only Tesla Superchargers using my local Supercharger rate of 67 c/kWh this trip would have cost 61.17 CAD for 91.3 kWh vs the 16.39 CAD with home charging and lower cost DCFC. The ICE at 10.1 L/100km would have cost 74.53 CAD using 68.3% of it's range where as the EV used 120% of it's range.

Fortunately, at least in Quebec, we are seeing more competition for DCFC rates and it does pay to shop around a bit. When we travel farther, we try to line things up so we can leverage hotel charging when feasible. (if we can't, it's not the end of the world, so we don't go out of our way to stay where there is L2 charging)
