ecmn | It's very variety specific. Some give up a bunch and some very little. The way it has been explained to me is the black layer acts as a filter in the kernel. As moisture leaves the kernel some dry matter escapes through the black layer with it. Some varieties hold the dry matter than others. I've got a list of varieties somewhere that were hand tested at 22-25% and then again at 17-19%. The variations are interesting but I think the varieties are probably outdated now. They were hand tested to eliminate header and combine losses. | |
