NWMO | Phantom yield loss is no phantom at all as far as I’ve seen. Going from 22% down to say, 17%, results in a couple things, typically.
1) more shattering as the cob enter the head, resulting in more header loss.
2) some ears may drop between harvesting times. It doesn’t take an astronomical amount of ear drop to be noticeable
3) lodging. How many have seen a field degrade within 10 days time? If you pull into a field and there are barely any plants falling over, and then come back and you have 1 plant every 35’ that’s fallen over, that equates to 3 bushel/acre loss. (Figured using 16x40 ears, 30k harvestable ears/acre.)
You factor all of those things, and that’s the “phantom loss”. If you can get it out at 22% and dry it in a cost effective manner, do it | |
