I just replaced my guards and knife on mine as well and yes the first 4 guards are a different style to allow the knife to have more play.
Same thing happened to me on swather last year. We had to go and get different guards for the left side.
Hmmmmm do they make those guards specific to the right- and left-hand side other than the very outside one on each side?
Yes, I believe there is 1 VERY special open toped guard on the head end of each sickle, and two more for sure if not 3 more of a different special flavor with no ledger plate backing next to it, then the center guards are all the same with the ledger plates except for the overlapping area in the middle.
