Subject: RE: sowing alfalfa & orchard grass

SW Ohio
"here" the horse market is leaning away from heavy percent alfalfa, even the racers and thoroughbreds. My good fields are alfalfa/orchard and if first cut is 50/50 then third and fourth cut will be 80/20 or 90/10 due to heat and moisture. Last new field I did, used 6# alfalfa and 12# orchard and it still has majority alfalfa in second thru fourth cutting ( it made 125 SS first cut nice hobby horse feed and 75 SS dairy quality second cut per acre). Plan to do a couple new fields this month and use 5 al and 15 orchard. My average stand lives for 10-12 years before I rotate it out.
