Make a fitting to pressurize the system with shop air to test for leaks first, it should hold for a very long time.
If you want to be fancy and correct use nitrogen.
Since you don't know the status of the system it's probably full of air anyway and you will likely be replacing parts and pulling a vacuum on it.
