You don't need to add any oil if none was lost. If you don't know for certain if or how much oil was lost, you need to do a complete flush and add required amount of new oil.
Since it didn't work when you acquired it you might as well start with a new compressor and dryer, then check for leaks elsewhere. You'll spend less money in the long run.
