Subject: Chlamydia in sheep

This spring right before turn out I had ewes develop conjunctivitis from large square bales that I left the strings on to try and cut back on waist. I noticed only certain sheep would dive their head in the bale and these were the one that developed eyes issue apparently from abrasion of the sharp hay irritating the eyes and allowing infection to take hold, many went blind. Thankfully they all regained their vision after treating them with antibiotics. Everything seemed good for a month or 2 and the lambs they had were healthy. Eventually the lambs started to go blind just like their moms. I treated them and conjunctivitis cleared and any blind ones regained sight eventually. Now I am dealing with red irritated ears and noses that accompanied the conjunctivitis in many of the lambs with little to no eye symptoms.

I believe the sheep have a form of chlamydia and my vet agrees but is not sure of what to do next. I am looking for answers on the best way of treating the issue. It seems like mass treatment in feed is a option?

Has anyone experienced this? Usually in livestock diseases if you treat a infection in the eyes and it goes away it goes away for good. This seems to have the ability to linger in the body and pop back up or be transmitted with little symptoms. A interesting note is that while it may be contagious from Ewe to lamb the disease does not seem to jump to other sheep that easily. Ewes and lambs that did not initially develop symptoms don't seem to have picked it up from other sheep.
