Subject: RE: Row cultivator/NH3 side dress rig

Central Iowa
I did this for many years with a B & H 9100 heavy residue 12 row cultivator. I ran it with the weeding discs and 16" sweeps. I used the brackets that B & H supplies to attach an NH3 knife behind the sweep. I ran 7 knives on 60" centers so that I never had a knife running in a wheel track (I didn't run duals). The middle 5 knives had 2 lines and the outside two had one line to get the correct application pattern. I also had notched disc sealers behind the knives and very little "smoke". This setup worked very well once it was configured. I hardly knew I was applying N at the same time as cultivation.

The heavy residue row cultivators are the only style rugged enough to apply NH3 and they do this very well because each row unit has it's own depth control.

All of the companies that market heavy residue cultivators including Buffalo, Orthman, Hiniker, Landoll, Lorenz, B & H and a few others have attachments that can apply NH3 or liquid. I might add that previously I had done this with Hiniker 5000, 6000, CIH 184 and Buffalo 6400 and then finally the B & H 9100 which I felt worked best of all those.

Many of the so called strip till units are just repurposed heavy residue cultivators.
