I,m envious of your timeline we freeze up in Nov and March is maybe once a decade. Multiple neighbors tried fall strips for several years, either got bogged down in mud or ground so dry couldn't get in the ground. If your willing to stop harvest for a few days I think fall strips can get done, due to extreme hills we are all spring strips. Have a bunch of PP so might try some strips this fall since they are flatter and wetter.
Yeah, no doubt it's more challenging with your shorter fall window. With spring strips, I feel like I just need 1 decent rain on it before planting. If it stays extremely dry after stripping in the spring, then I just plant a few inches off the top of the strip to avoid any burn issues. Actually, we've also stripped in December, January and February over those years when we get a chance. I've been no-till so long it doesn't take much dryness to be able to do a decent job and support the weight of the tanks and equip.
I think if I was up in central Minnesota or a similar N. location, and wanted to do cover crops, I'd consider drones to get a timely application of cc's once the crops started drying up but were still in the field. |
