Faunsdale, AL | Your problem is the tensioner pulley is on the tension/load side of the alternator pulley. It was originally on the “slack” side. Air pump is such a light load it didn’t cause a problem for belt to be tensioned on the load side of it, but the alternator pulls hard enough that the tensioner pulley lifts…….with predictable results.
A fixed idler to increase the “wrap” on the AC pulley would help. But you would have to find a model with one.
