Subject: Haying CRP ground. Need advice

We’re looking at buying a section of expired CRP land next to one of our current pastures. Hoping to Use it for extra hay over winter and graze it when we are short on grass. CRP here always looks dead and brown with alittle green in the spring. Sitting on 5-10 inches of rain in Colorado. It’s been a long time since we’ve used any CRP for hay. I was probably a kid 35 some years ago then. I know our custom Baler hates it. I was curious what we might expect for tonnage per acre cutting it once somewhere in like August before all the grass dies off. I’ve done this once before, but I don’t remember what it made or what the feed value was. I know nitrates can be an issue

I know I’m sick of feeding corn stalks. $120 a ton and $18 a bale to grind it. It’s getting ridiculous. I figure we might have somewhere around $40 a ton into the CRP depending on yield. I know the cows seam to like it standing. Just don’t eat the dead stuff typically
