Subject: RE: Big Oak Trees Dying on Our Farm

southern MN
We are on the third round of Dutch elm disease. Took out a couple very big old regular elm that had survived the previous rounds. Sorry to see them go. Have a big one behind the house yet, and some smaller ones still scattered in the grove.

Ash trees are dying off pretty quick.

Don’t have any oak, but have heard of oak wilt and them disappearing.

Pines don’t do well in our soil, and spruce are only so so. Red cedar is about the only conifer that does good, and they are a bit of an odd thing to plant a lot of.

We are left with maple. When a maple disease hits, it’s all over.

We will be left with frustrating mulberry shrub trees. And despite being a maple family, I suspect box elder might survive….
