Growing up in the 1960's and 70's and traveling and having to stop at a local gas station, I always remember having to get the restroom key. The restrooms were always on the side of the building, and the key was usually hanging on a peg by the cash register. It wasn't until convenience stores came into fashion and the restrooms were moved indoors that the need for a key ended.
