Seeing the same die off here with our poplars in the past decade or so. I look back on pictures I took a few years ago and it was just a wall of green out there with the poplar bushes. Now its more like dead skeletons standing and eventually crashing to the ground. Yes, landing on the field edges and pasture fences. One theory I have heard is that it is the frequent freeze/thaw cycles we get in spring that causes them to die. 
One of the biggest problems here has been water kill from the high water levels in sloughs. This pic on my farm from 2019.
