In a perfect world that would be the case.  I think that I didn't have existing guidance lines to match up with I could use a "newer" datum but because my lines were originally created with a base that used NAD83 I had to go that route.  Also, if I want to use make a portable base you can configure the board to survey itself in.  It takes about 15 minutes.
